The disappearance of Matti was not discovered until years later when his rental apartment changed owner and no more rent was paid. An enormous amount of mail was found in his home. In July of 2001, according to bank records, money was still being withdrawn from his account in Pori, Finland. After that Matti would leave for Crete, Greece for a holiday trip with a Swedish travel agency.

After the trip to Crete, Matti ended up in Warsaw, Poland for some reason. In Warsaw he went to the Finnish embassy and said he had been robbed of his passport, money and a travel ticket with which he would continue his journey. He would have received help from the embassy, ​​but he did not want to. Furthermore, no more observations have been made of Matti.
