VANDE VEIRE Gustaaf

  • Missing since: September 14, 1984
  • Missing from: Tielt, Belgium

On Friday September 14, 1984, Gustaaf Vande Veire disappeared from Tielt. The man, then 47 years old, lived with his son in Café ‘t Meerlaantje, near the level crossing on the Driesstraat in Tielt. Gustaaf Vande Veire was a café owner and independent truck driver. He suddenly disappeared with his car, a brown-red Volvo 144 model 1970, with number plate FCA-327. In the years 1963 – 1965 Gustaaf Vande Veire stayed in the region of Gosselies and Warneton. His son was born in Roux during that period. On September 28, 1984, the registration certificate of his car surfaced in the turning basin of the Roeselare-Leie canal, about 1 km from the port of Roeselare. Almost 25 years later, on February 11, 2009, during a search for a missing man in the port of Roeselare, the wreckage of a Volvo 144 was found, possibly the Volvo 144 of Gustaaf Vande Veire. No human remains were found. If Gustaaf Vande Veire is still alive, the man is now more than 70 years old.

Gustaaf Vande Veire is a suspect in the Lieve Desmet file. Whether he was actually involved in the disappearance, sexual assault and murder of the 13-year-old girl has never been established with certainty.
