VAN HIEL Herman

  • Missing since: May 7, 1982
  • Missing from: Ghent, Belgium

Herman VAN HIEL was a chaplain in the Ghent prison. He was 44 years old on the day of his disappearance and would have turned 70 that year. On May 7, 1982, Herman left by train from Ghent to Leuven to attend his criminology lectures. He left the course earlier than expected. The investigators know that that afternoon he collected 3000 BF from the bank, which was a considerable sum of money for that time. Herman Van Hiel had an appointment that evening with a warden who lived on Voorhavenlaan in Ghent. The chaplain has never been there because the bottle of whiskey he had bought was still on the table and his route plan was torn in the trash can. After so many years, many traces have of course been cleared, but the investigators still keep 3 pistes open. It could be suicide, murder or deliberate disappearance. An aging photo of the chaplain was drawn up.
