Niku disappeared on the morning of June 17, 2006 when he was on a cruise with his friends at the ferry Viking Isabella between Turku, Finland and Stockholm, Sweden. He was last seen last at 02.30. He told his friends he would go and wait for some Asian girls outside the toilet so he could get their contact information. Niku was seen on a surveillance camera at 03.45 when he was walking in a corridor with the two women. The Asian girls traveled under false names, none of them has been seen leaving the ferry.
